Good to Great
We should NEVER settle for just “good enough;” we should always stretch from good to great – the best we can be!! Here are imperatives about moving ourselves from good to great:
It’s ALWAYS a CHOICE
We must make the choice to be excellent; and it really is a choice. Walt Disney's philosophy was, "let's always strive to be perfect and settle for "excellent."
Let April 1st, 2019 be the day YOU CHOOSE to:
- Accept yourself so much that you slide from “selfish to selfless” and choose to have a positive influence on others;
- Begin some advance decision making (ADM) in several areas of life – choose to think and plan ahead;
- Allow your perspective of gratitude drive your perception of opportunity and choose to see the world working FOR you; not AGAINST you;
- Begin noticing some simple pleasures you’ve been missing; choose to notice.
It Usually Takes GUTS
Phil Mickelson was being criticized for a stupid golf shot from pine straw between two trees at the 2010 Masters. He was asked to explain the difference between a great shot and safe shot. He said the following: “A great shot is when you pull it off. A safe shot is when you don't have the guts to try it.”
Moving from “good to great” sometimes requires us to have the GUTS to risk a tough decision. “Great” requires us to lean-into a life-long adventure toward progress. It’s extremely important because there is "Power in Progress!"
It occasionally requires us to "Adjust Our Sails"
The late Elizabeth Edwards, who courageously battled her terminal illness, said the following:
“I do know that when my children are older and telling their own children about their grandmother, they will be able to say that she stood in the storm…and when the wind did not blow her way – and it surely has not – she adjusted her sails.”
She could have wallowed in her tragedies. Certainly, if anyone had a right to feel sorry for themselves, she did. But that wasn’t her. She decided that, even though she wasn’t dealt the hand she expected or wanted, she would adjust her strategy and live to the fullest. It’s a lesson to try to take in. Remember; we all face storms. Some are literally life-changing and some are momentary blips. But a simple, bold decision to adjust the sails and even ride the waves to a new destination can mean a life well lived; whether it unfolds the way you planned or not.
If we have been less than courageous in the pursuit of what we want to be; let's avoid the nay-Sayers and develop the guts to stretch ahead toward what we want to be. If we have made a habit of “Oh, that’s good enough," let us purpose in our hearts to choose excellence. Because if it's worth doing at all...it's worth doing right.
