Make it Automatic
Habits are mental shortcuts learned from experiences.
The 4 steps in creating habits is known as the habit loop:
- Cue - I hear a ping on my phone
- Craving - I want to check my socials
- Response - I pick it up
- Reward - I am rewarded with a funny reel
If we intentionally create cues that make good habits the easier choice to make,
we will be rewarded with more mental margin, more inner freedom.
For instance:
- Cue - I see the phone notification to pack my gym bag
- Craving - I crave the prepared feeling of having a less hectic morning
- Response - I take 2 minutes to pack my bag and put it by the door
- Reward - I am rewarded with the mental freedom of knowing I am ready for the next day
Habits create freedom from having to make another decision.
