Make It Easy
Why is it that no one has to talk me into watching TV, eating ice cream, or scrolling through funny reels? Probably because, for me, all of those things are easy. And we LOVE easy! Easy isn’t always best, but at least it’s easy. Often, to our regret, easy wins over best.
So how can we make “easy” work FOR us? How can we use “easy” to get “best”? We can follow James Clear’s advice from Atomic Habits and make our habits easy… at least while we are starting.
There’s not much easier than the 2 Minute Rule, one of Clear’s top principles for starting a new habit. Do you want to become a reader? Start by reading for two minutes. Do you want to stay in shape? Start exercising for two minutes. Do you have a closet you need to clean out? Work at it for two minutes a day.
The initial goal is to build the habit by simple repetition. Since the new habit only takes 2 minutes, our brain perceives it as easy and, therefore, repeatable. Repeating the desired habit daily incorporates it into our lives and makes it easier for us to build on this habit eventually leading us to the “best”.
What new, positive habit could you start in two minutes? Need some input? Take the next two minutes and connect with a DREAM4 Coach.
