The Moment of Truth
This is a picture of Horseshoe Falls, which is on the border of America and Canada. Over the past few days, my wife and I enjoyed some vacation time in Niagara Falls, Ontario with five other couples.
There were many highlights on our trip. These included ziplining along the river, dining in the Skylon Tower nearly 800 feet above the Falls, enjoying a light show and then fireworks over the Falls at night. But by far our most interesting adventure was the “Maid of the Mist” boat ride to the edge of the Falls. One of the boats is pictured above.
We were on the far right, top-side of the boat as it approached the Falls on the way in. The boat was rocking, the wind was blowing, and we felt like we were in a tropical storm. Although it was rough, we did not realize that the entire left side of the boat had actually protected us from most of the stormy elements on our approach.
As the boat disappeared into the mist, it turned 180 degrees before coming out again. We then experienced our moment of truth. The full force of what felt like 50 - 60 MPH winds, from the unobstructed power of falling water, hit us directly in the face. We were soaked – but it was amazing!
It was interesting to watch the reaction of everyone on the boat immediately after this moment of truth. People behaved in very different ways.
Although everyone received the same message beforehand – that we were likely to get wet – some seemed frustrated when it actually happened. Of course, most people took it in stride and fully assumed the risk of the ride. Some put on the ponchos that were provided. Others came prepared with their own rain suit. Still more wore bathing suits and fully embraced the reality…water makes you wet!
Anticipating a moment of truth is the best way to live. Then when that moment happens – we can be ready.
We all receive the same message about life – sometimes storms come – and we can get drenched. Some people just get frustrated. Others take it in stride. But we all have an opportunity to be better equipped in order to be as prepared as possible. Being prepared allows us to respond – not to react.
Anticipating moments of truth should create the desire within us to learn, to improve, to do better, to make good decisions, to build solid habits to be self-accountable. Preparing for moments of truth, with proactive thinking and planning, allows us to fully live in that moment.
We look forward to helping you think and prepare for your personal moment of truth. You can turn it into exactly what is needed to take a forward step, sustain a positive perspective and – to live life on purpose.
